BRIEF

Summary

New product design contest on Desall.com: Bormioli Pharma and Desall invite you to design a tablet dispenser capable of releasing medication in a controlled manner according to prescribed dose.

Company description

At Bormioli Pharma, we design and produce pharmaceutical packaging systems that are used by millions of patients around the world every year.

We are present in Europe with 10 production plants and count on the work of more than 1300 people to offer our products in over 100 countries.
We like to consider ourselves a “start-up” with over 100 years of experience, as we were founded in a historical industrial environment but in 2017 we became an independent company.

This makes it possible for us to be both solid and dynamic. In recent years we have invested relentlessly, strengthening our production capacities, acquiring new companies, but above all we have turned innovation into a lever for growth.
In this spirit, we have created our own Open Innovation model; a system based on the sharing of skills and opening up our workflows to the outside world. We believe that collaboration is the driver of change and that new ideas can improve people’s lives.

Bormioli Pharma is looking for a new product capable of containing and dispensing oral drugs, particularly tablets and micro-tablets, in a controlled manner.
In the medical field, there are different types of prescription that require accurate dosage of the drug, but at the same time need to be flexible according to the needs of the patient, i.e. modulating the amount of tablets according to age, weight and other variables.
The focus of the product will therefore be to improve patient adherence by maximising the match between the doctor’s prescription and the drug actually taken by the patient.

Guidelines

For the correct realisation of your proposals, keep into consideration the following guidelines:

Product typology: The dispenser can be designed according to one of the following design approaches.

- The dispenser may be an accessory assembled on the top of a standard tablet bottle with a 35mm diameter opening, thus acting only as a dispenser (for more information on the bottle, please refer to the Material files).
- The dispenser can be a complete product, both as a packaging to hold/transport the tablets and as a dispenser.

In order to enable greater versatility, autonomy and guarantee better user care, the dispenser will be able to integrate additional functions linked to Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, ideally while keeping the production cost as low as possible.

How to use: The dispenser will be used by a caregiver, including a professional caregiver such as a doctor or nurse, or directly by the patient.
It is necessary that the prescribed dose is set at the time of taking the drug, and by performing a specific action, the dispenser will dispense the dose.
Both dose setting and dispensing can be done manually (with a visual confirmation of the number of tablets measured before dispensing and the operation of a mechanical actuator) or semi-automatically (see the Technologies paragraph).

The dispenser has to be easily transportable, manageable and simple to use, and one-handed solutions will be appreciated.

Where to use: The places of use of the dispenser can be many, home, office, outdoors, in public places, in hospitals, or in nursing homes, wherever the user needs to take his dose of medicine through tablets or micro-tablets.

Technologies inside the product: the technologies to be designed are mainly mechanical. The dispenser will have to handle tablets of different sizes (2 to 5 mm diameter), its mechanism will therefore have to be relatively versatile or scalable and not rely on volumetric measurement principles to deliver the dose.
The system shall also be designed to minimise damage or crushing of tablets during dispensing.
An electronic IoT integration connected to a smartphone and app can be included to set the dosage, count the tablets being dispensed, monitor the remaining content inside the bottle, activate the dispenser, etc.
The system may combine or may be associated with child proof devices/accessories.

Production technologies and materials: Plastic injection moulding is the main approved production technology for the dispenser. All areas coming into contact with the drug shall be made of plastic materials. Matt finishes are preferred, allowing for grip and easy handling of the dispenser.

Aesthetics and shapes: The aesthetics of the product shall be minimal and modern, using curved and soft shapes, and excluding sharp and angular shapes.
Other sectors besides medicine, such as aerospace, can also be used as inspiration for the style. The product shall communicate and ensure reliability, robustness, trust, safety and ease of use.

Colours: Please refer to Bormioli Pharma’s corporate visual identity for a series of colour guidelines.

Logo: you are invited to include the graphic symbol that makes up the company logo on the product case, making sure that it receives appropriate visibility. The vector file of the logo to be included is provided within the Material files.

Deliverables: upload all the images that better present your projects The images in the gallery (maximum 5) must have a proportion of 4:3, ex. : 960x720 px; allowed format file: .jpg, .gif or .png; colours: RGB; max size file: 1MB. You are invited to submit and attach a complete 3D file of mechanical parts dedicated to dispensing and an analysis of the phases of the product’s use.

Evaluation criteria: in the evaluation of your submissions the Sponsor will take into account the following criteria:

Functionality/Usability 5/5
Degree of innovation 5/5
Aesthetics 4/5
Technical feasibility 4/5
Compliance with brand 3/5
