Summary

Selle Royal, leading company in the bicycle saddles market, is looking for an innovative system that gives support to the in-store sells. The aim of the contest is to identify an easy measuring tool able to suggest to each customer the most suitable saddle among the specific ergonomic range that will be offered in the next season and that will exhibit on a dedicated floor-display.

Selle Royal has been a world-leading bicycle saddle brand for over 50 years. Inspired by the mission to support cyclists, the Company’s history is one of continuous innovation built on research, technology, and advanced design. Selle Royal is the brand of reference for individual cyclists and major bicycle manufacturers alike. It is present in over 70 countries around the world today, with product lines designed for every type of riding.

Selle Royal Saddle Selector is the contest launched on the stream of the bike and saddle market trends which is going from a more generic to a more specific approach of comfort. Cyclists are very concerned about finding products that meet their specific needs.
In line with its mission, Selle Royal wants to offer a retail service up to the consumer demand for the best saddle by analysing some scientific parameters based on the body features like inclination on the bike, ischial bones distance and weight.

What we need
Selle Royal Saddle Selector is the chance to develop an innovative and engaging retail tool at the service of the end-consumers. The saddle selector is composed of two parts:

Measuring tool : the end-consumers shall sit on such device that will collect the body data needed to retrieve the most appropriate saddle.

Floor-display of products : a floor-display that shall exhibit at least 18 saddles with their packaging.


Components description :

Measuring tool
Function : the measuring tool shall highlight the right saddle for every person who takes the measurements. The tool combines three different parameters, which – in order of priority – are:

1. Riding position , viz. the inclination on the bike. This parameter identifies three types of riders: Athletic rider - who sits on the saddle with 45° spine angle; the Moderate rider – with a 60° spine angle and the Relaxed rider – who sits upright with a 90° spine angle.

2. Ischial bones distance according to the riding position (ischial bones are not parallel, accordingly the distance among them in the Athletic riding position is not the same as in the Moderate Riding position). The result will indicate the saddle size: S, M or L (the names of the categories are not definitive, feel free to suggest some other in line with your idea).

3. Weight of the person, which influences the required padding softness: if the weight is under 60 kg, a soft saddle (model a) is most appropriate; if the weight is above 60 kg, a hard saddle (model b) is more adequate.

The combined result of the three parameters leads to the following saddle range composed of 18 saddles :
Athletic : Size Sa and Sb, Size Ma and Mb, Sized La and Lb
Moderate : Size Sa and Sb, Size Ma and Mb, Sized La and Lb
Relaxed : Size Sa and Sb, Size Ma and Mb, Sized La and Lb

Note well : the measuring tool should be designed so as to allow the end-consumer to easily make the measurements without needing any assistance and find out autonomously the most appropriate saddle. Graphics, texts and icons should be employed to better help the user go through all measurements steps.

Dedicated floor-display
Function : the display should give maximum visibility to the range of saddles available. Think of a display that hosts at least 18 saddles on one side, each coming inside a packaging measuring 21 cm x 30 cm with euro hook slot ( see the Material files attached for a packaging example ).


General guidelines :
Design : the measuring tool and the floor-display may be physically connected or not. Keep in mind that the two elements may also be used independently according to the retailers’ needs. Feel free to choose the most appropriate elements (graphics, digital devices, sensors, etc.) to achieve the objective in respect of the budget available.

Size : the two components should be conceived so as to occupy small room inside the stores and to be easily used by the unskilled approach of most end-consumers.

Style : the two components should bear the same style which has to be in line with Selle Royal brand in the choosing of materials and finishing.

Textual and graphical elements : both components should present the Selle Royal logo and the most suitable explanatory writings and icons.

Budget : the maximum budget available for the realisation of the measuring tool is 150 € and for the floor display is 200€.


Eligibility and submission
Participation is free of charge and is opened to designers and creative talents of any nationality and age. Participants can choose to present one or more projects, but only the projects published on the web site www.desall.com through the upload page devoted to “Selle Royal Saddle Selector” will be accepted.

Winner of the previous phase.
The following brief is focused on this work.

In line with its mission, Selle Royal wants to offer a retail service up to the consumer demand for the best saddle by analysing some scientific parameters based on the body features like, respectively: 1. inclination of the back on the bike (Riding Position) 2. ischial bones distance and 3. weight.


What we need
The second step of the contest starts from the winning solution of the first phase of the contest, by implementing new solutions for the design and for the usability. The most efficient and the most innovative solution, compatible with realistic parameters of production and global distribution, will gain the final award.

What we liked from the winner :
All the three scientific parameters are measured by means of the tool alone and not inserted by the user himself/herself;
• A unique handlebar for all the Riding Positions allows the final dealer also to exclude one Riding Position in case the shop is not selling that kind of products (ex. a Sport shop may not be selling “Relaxed” products), by using removable or detachable parts (the handlebar may not have the “Relaxed” position indicator);
• The analogical functioning of the Measuring tool has been much appreciated in view of its international distribution;
• The seating measurement for ischial bones distance is not invasive and does not require embarrassing situations/movements/actions performed by the user, considering that our target includes all sexes, cultures and ages;
• The tool is easy to understand thanks to the informative dashboard placed in front of the user that can contain the iconic images showing the different steps of measurement and likely the possibility to record the result for each measurement during the whole measurement process. It would be ideal if the results of the 3 measurements were all reported in the central frontal dashboard (even if the ischial bones distance is not measured frontally).
• The material/graphics used for the seat bones measurement clearly show the sizes (x<11cm=S, 1213cm=M, x>13cm=L).


What we need to further investigate :

Measuring tool
• Considering that this kit will be used internationally we need to avoid any digital instruments (due to the plug incompatibility issues) searching a solution that can fully work analogically ;
• The measurement tool should be conceived so as to occupy the least space inside the stores ( approximately 1mq ) as possible ; accordingly we need to develop something more efficient in terms of space, preferably leaving the possibility open for the dealer to fold it or to easily remove or overlap the components of the measurement tool for storing purposes;
• The weight is a sensitive information/data, so the output of the measurement should be other than a number (do not indicate the exact weight of the person) and has not to be influenced by the user position on the tool.
• Dimensions and positions of the different elements of the measuring tool have to be perfect in order to exactly replicate the Riding Positions.
• The maximum budget available for the realisation of the measuring tool is € 100

Floor-display
• The most important feature that should be most appealing in the floor-display is the Riding Position criteria.
• The floor-display should be conceived in a modular way, in order to allow the final dealer to adjust the floor-display to his/her needs (a Sport shop may not have “Relaxed” positions saddles).
• The floor-display should allow for 18 hooks (2 saddles for each hook, for a total of 36 saddles) distributed in different modules according to the Riding Position so as to allow all possible configurations: for example, 6 Athletic + 6 Moderate + 6 Relaxed or 9 Athletic and 9 Moderate etc.
Size and soft/hard criteria should always be present in the floor-display
• The floor-display should be as much uniform as possible with all the range of products
• The floor-display might need to be customized according the local language; accordingly modules with replaceable informative parts/layers will be most welcomed.
• Further extra features will be much appreciated: a storage space for saddle (a drawer, etc.), brochure holders or other innovative solutions from the retail point of view.
• The maximum budget available for the realisation of the floor-display is € 200


General guidelines:
For the correct realisation of the project, the following criteria are to be taken into consideration: SR image and style, space needed and delivery limits (boxes has to be euro pallet compatible ), user-friendly information/interaction, budget.

In addition:
• Both the Measuring tool and the Floor-display should occupy the least space as possible, be easy to assemble and compatible with euro pallet boxes.
• The Measuring tool and the Floor-display may be physically connected or not. Keep in mind that they might also be used independently according to the final dealers' needs.
• Both the components should have the same style and be in line with the Selle Royal brand image in the choosing of materials and finishing (mdf, metal, wood, precious materials) and necessarily use the main brand colour (Pantone Black 7U)
• Both components should present the Selle Royal logo (see the Material files attached) and the most easy-to-understand writings and icons (for the measuring steps explanation) as possible.
• The less effort required by the user, the better.
