Penzo + Fiore started working together as an artistic duo in 2009. They work with performance, installation, video and photography. Their research focuses on conflicts, on the essence of the human being, on the seduction of the fragility. They dedicate particular attention to the analysis and observation of the context that surrounds them. In the last period, the main material of their production is glass, always connected with the concept of relation, contemporary environment and connection with the origin of the same material. They work and live between Venice and Berlin.
They are included in two thesis of the students Anna Viani and Valentina Bonato, the first one for the Faculty of Art Management in Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, and the second one for the Faculty of Architecture in IUAV, always in Venice.
From 2010, they started to work like artists and curators in a very interesting area near Venice, Forte Marghera, where they collaborate to the creation of a contemporary art project, Parco del Contemporaneo, with many private and public entities. Among them, Riccardo Caldura. They also had the patronage of Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, of Ca’ Foscari University and the operative collaboration of Circolo Bateson, Rome.
In 2011, they met Giosetta Fioroni, thanks to Cristina’s studies about the writer Goffredo Parise. From that moment, they develop a series of dialogues with the artist in her studio of Trastevere and an epistolary communication between them, based on the idea of paying attention to the significant components of her life and to her artistic context. All this material flowed into an artist book, “Grata di linguaggi”, a dialogue among the special people that characterized her life. In the book, there are texts of Erri De Luca, Andrea Zanzotto, Goffredo Parise and others. They also created the work Come tra lo zolfo e una capretta di latte, a photographic triptych based on the thoughts of the writer around the concept of pornography. The curator of this exhibition was Stefano Cecchetto. Other artists were Tano Festa, Schifano, Ontani and so on.
In Berlin, they are connected with many galleries and independent spaces, like Tacheles, Abnormals Gallery and Emerson Gallery. They are involved in collective and solo exhibitions, in particular related with the language of performance art.
In 2013, they started a new cooperation with Berengo Studio, which produced as a result a chessboard in Murano glass, completely black, of 120x120 cm. This chessboard was exposed in the most important glass art collection of XX century, the “Fucina degli angeli”, featuring pieces of Max Ernst, Picasso, Cocteau. The same piece was in Dordrecht for Glassfever, an exhibition of the most important production of Berengo Studio in the last 20 years. Other artists of Glassfever are Ervin Wurm, Jan Fabre, Monica Bonvicini, Tony Cragg. The collaboration with Berengo Studio is still on with several new works.
In 2014, they took part at the stand-up curated by Annalisa Cattani and Raffaele Quattrone, connected with the Rebirth Day of Micheleangelo Pistoletto. In this occasion, Raffaele Quattrone selected the piece of Penzo+Fiore, Tides, in order to insert the work in the Fondazione Pistoletto's website. Tides was a performance that the two artists displayed in London, curated by Something Human, a curator collective.
In 2012, they are selected by ArtVerona to show their work in the Independents Section. In 2013, they are invited in the Talk Area of Independents to present the project Contro Zona, an art event in Mestre (Venezia) that received the patronage of IUAV, Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation and the Venice Municipality. The catalogue was presented by an Angela Vettese text.
In 2016, with the exhibition Disordine rigido at Fusion Art Gallery in Torino, Penzo+Fiore start using glass in their productions. This is the beginning of a new artistic period, caracterized by the contemporary approch to glass.
In 2018 the artists were included in the Lux-Lumen collective exhibition of Fondazione Berengo for the annual conference of the Glass Art Society in Murano; they realize the Murano Magma conference at the Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi; they present the work Impero in "una vetrina", an event in collaboration with MAXXI Rome; they are invited to participate in the Brain tooling exhibition of Dolomiti Contemporanee; they become part of the Galleria Massimo de Luca of Venezia-Mestre.
The approach that Penzo+Fiore use in art is finalized not only to create concrete object, but also meeting, conference, experiential workshop, events. In each case, they look for a connection between the significance of actions, situations, exhibitions and the human context they have around.
